Hi!

I'm working this properly, aren't I? Sorry, it's just taken me a bit of practise to work out. Much easier to just send an owl, but I haven't seen any around. Anyway, I'm Cedric Diggory and I've only just arrived. I'll be working in the magical department, but that's not all I need to do. I've done some thinking, and our futures are rather uncertain, aren't they? We don't know if we'll go home again, or even if we'll live. But that means we have to live while we can, right? 'Seize the day', as they say?

So I thought we could possibly have some fun. Meet me down in the Sensoriums if you'd like to learn to fly on a broom. It's more comfortable than it looks, I promise. And if I'm understanding how these rooms work properly, you'll be safe. Anyone's welcome, don't be shy! We really ought to get to know each other. Maybe we could even fly in groups if you're comfortable. There are also sports that can be played in the air, but I'd save those for another lesson.

A broomstick. Wizards started enchanting them to fly centuries ago. We needed a flying object that was usable but wouldn't arouse suspicion if a non-magical person happened to find it.

I don't see why I couldn't! It doesn't really require an incantation like other magic, just willpower.

I'm seriously clueless as to what possible position you can contort your body into that would make riding one of those things comfortable.

...but I'm actually kind of curious.

That's why we have Cushioning Charms. All modern brooms are enchanted to be comfortable for riding long distances.

We have room for you if you'd like to come. Flying's wonderful, it's one of my favourite things about being a wizard.

Brooms were highly uncomfortable to ride for centuries, but the Cushioning Charm was invented in 1820 to fix that. You can't see it, but you feel a cushion supporting your bottom when you ride.

no offense to your historical wizard culture and stuff but riding around on a broom with a cushion stuck to it sounds only a little less uncomfortable.

Yeah. You have to be able to convince your broom to obey you. It's not difficult, it just takes a little practice.

Apparition's more efficient, yes, but it's rather enjoyable to fly on one.

I'll bet you wouldn't say that if you saw a game of Quidditch!

If you don't mind me asking - would you happen to be from the same world as Ron Weasley? He has since returned to the pods, but I did speak to him once about the enchanted broomsticks of his world.

I would, yes. We didn't know each other well, but I know he's a Gryffindor in Harry's year.
