Pay attention, kids and non-kids, 'cause this is a school post.
First of all, I acknowledge that this is a long time in coming. I apologize for the wait, but now that a few months have gone by, it's really time we started setting this thing down for keeps. A few of us teachers have already been holding some classes of our own, but the first day of official organized class structure is September 1 my earth-time, which is in two weeks and four days. There's a small program on your comms that you can set to alert you of times and dates before the deadlines go whizzing past your head. If you haven't used it yet, or want to figure out how, speak the words "day planner tutorial" into the speaker and a set of instructions will pop up on the screen.
We already have a good list of teachers going, and I know that Sheeana has already claimed times and dates for her classes. Sheeana, if you could comment here with the days and times you're claiming, that'd be great. I'll put them on the scheduling table when I program it tomorrow before I put it up.
List of Current Teaching Volunteers:
Head Trainer (skill and combat) - Master Chief
Physical Education - Sheeana Brugh, Robert Donovan
Sociology - Sheeana Brugh
Religious/Political Studies - Sheeana Brugh
Basic Math - Meluly, Billy Cranston (Tutor)
Basic Physics - Meluly, Billy Cranston (Tutor)
Chemistry - Wyn Callahan (TA) Billy Cranston (Tutor) - I was wondering if maybe you guys could work teaching this class together? If not, let me know and I'll take this one, and you guys can assist.
Biology - Jean Grey
Classical Lit and English (writing) - Mei Ling
Astrophysics (and related disciplines)- Lafiel
Musical theory and execution - Allen Gentry.
Yeah I get the fun class, I'm the principal. Deal with it.
We still need a few more people willing to cover certain subjects. Jack Spicer, I was wondering if you'd be willing to cover a class on engineering and robotics, starting with beginners' level. There's a strong possibility that piloting will be a useful skill on this trip, so anybody who wants to volunteer for a piloting class, post your qualifications now. For the record, I am also encouraging the teaching of right-brain appropriate classes, hence the musical theory and exceuction. Art, creative writing, and other music teachers, step up or step aside. Ron, do you feel like taking home ec?
Meluly has been assembling a list of 18-and-unders here, though I stress that classes are open to anybody who feels like they've got something to learn, not just minors. Remember, if you want to go to school but have not yet taken a diagnostic placement exam, I have them available in the Engineering department. Ask for Allen. I'm the tall guy with the Jewfro. You can't miss me.
I know a few of you out there aren't enthusiastic about the idea of a school, either because you're sick of the one from your own home, or have gotten by fine without one in the past. But I hope you'll give this one a chance anyway, because the point here isn't to keep you busy for 8 hours a day, or to force you through a system so the grownups can say the government did right by you. The point is for everyone on the ship, not just the 18-and-unders, to have a place to go to learn things that will be useful on the trip, and, for those who want to be able to get through school in the event that we get home, be prepared to continue learning from their age-appropriate level, or pass the appropriate equivalency exam (right now I'm aiming for the GED).
The only rule here is that you treat your teachers with the respect they deserve for spending their valuable time and energy on passing their knowledge on to you. If you can do that, no matter who you are, no matter what level you're at, you're welcome to learn here.
We all know we're here for a purpose, and the more we know, the more likely we will be to succeed at that purpose, and to find our way home. So give this a shot. You really don't have anything to lose.
And if one of you [expletives deleted]s says tl;dr, I will punch you in the face, because that's how we roll at Gentry U. Got it?
Man, I always wanted a school named after myself.

Also, can I suggest an emergency first aid crash course? Just to have people take a couple of days to learn CPR and all that sort of thing. It's best done in small groups but I could take people in fleets of twelve or so and just run through all the need to knows.
I know we've got a great medical staff but I don't think it would hurt to get everyone up to speed on what to do when someone else is bleeding.

If you change your mind and think of something you would like to learn from anyone on the list, drop by the engineering department and we'll talk.

Technically, you don't HAVE to go, though. You just might learn something if you do.
