About the "beer tree"

I haven't gone and seen it for myself but I guess this applies even if there is no beer tree since I know there's alcohol on board.

I don't know how it is for non-humans, but for humans your brain is still developing until your mid 20s. Consuming alcohol can damage your brain and so it won't develop properly and can even kill your brain cells. Too much alcohol at any age can cause permanent brain damage.

I know we don't exactly have laws for this and most people will probably just ignore this, but please be responsible and think about the consequences. It'd be a good idea to follow any laws that were in place on your home world, at least. I know where I'm from you're not allowed to drink until you're 21, when a lot of the brain changes have all ready taken place.

I'm not going to ask anyone's age. I won't give any to children, but if you want alcohol, it's your decision. Not mine.

For humans, younger than fourteen. I don't have any idea how most of the other races age.

Not a problem.

Lady, we're stuck on a living spaceship with no way of ever going home or even knowing where we're going.

I'm gonna drink if I want to.

A minimum age for drinking? What a strange idea.

[identity profile] crysteel-future.livejournal.com 2010-05-20 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh this I have to see.

The drinking age kinda went over our heads where I'm from. But then, I only had a little alcohol here and there because of the effects a large amount has on the functioning of my precogging.

Has anyone tested the beer yet?

I Haaaaaave. Beer's great.

I can understand the concern, but not all of us are from your universe. The limits your culture set on consumption of alcohol might not be acceptable to others. I know in my universe there were many different standards, and it all depended on where you were born, and how you were raised.

Furthermore just because so many of us look, and call ourselves human there still might be many differences in brain chemistry we don't know about. We might be identical, and we might not. Even if we are certainly of the same exact species the genetic differences from my galaxy alone in the human population is staggering.

I think each person is capable of making their own decision in this matter based on their species, and cultural values. I'm not advocating serving alcohol to children, but if they are old enough to understand their decision let them suffer the consequences. They'll know in the morning if they over do it.

If the concern is killing brain cells, pulling G's while shooting womp rats from your speeder can do that! And I did that all the time when I was growing up back home.

Still, I understand your concerns. Having gone through a few rough morning afters I wouldn't want my son to get as drunk as a Hutt on Boonta Eve. But it's more important to be responsible and practice moderation than to try and shield someone from every possible harm.

A tree that can make beer...? How is that possible?

[identity profile] magictrkswwater.livejournal.com 2010-05-21 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, gee - thanks, Miss Morality.

Not that I'd drink or anything, but really, any more cheesy and I'm going to be expecting you to say "And knowing's half the battle".

She's just trying to make sure some kids don't go overboard.

When adult's do it, its just stupid looking, but some kids can get reckless, I guess. Not that I think there's too many like that on board.

A beer tree? I'm surprised we never found one of those in the Digital World...

...

I think I missed something. There's a tree that makes beer? How?

No, wait. I'll see if I can answer that one myself, actually.
